10 Simple Ways to Style Your Console Table

Let’s be honest.

In most Sri Lankan homes, the console table (or that small table near the entrance) starts with good intentions…
But after a few weeks?

It becomes the place for keys, wallet, specs, handbag, random receipts, even the dog’s leash

And the worst part is, it’s usually the first spot anyone sees when they enter your home.

Whether you live in a Colombo apartment, a newly built modern house, or even a classic Sri Lankan home with a long hallway, your console area is like your home’s “first impression.”

So, let’s fix it in the simplest way possible.

No expensive makeover.
No complicated styling rules.
Just small, practical ideas that make your space look neat, intentional, and beautiful.

1. Start with a Mirror (Because It Changes Everything)

You know that feeling when your home looks a little smaller or darker than you want?

A mirror instantly helps.

It reflects light, makes the space feel open, and gives your console a proper focal point, like something “professionally done.”

Tip:
If your entrance is close to the living room or dining, a mirror also gives that modern “apartment look” we all love.

2. Add One Tall Item (Height = Designer Look)

Most people style a console table with small things only.

Result? It looks flat.

Instead, place one tall decorative vase or a pair of candle holders. It adds height and makes the console look premium, without doing too much.

Keep it minimal: 1 or 2 tall accents max

3. Add Greenery (Even If It’s Artificial)

We love plants, but let’s be real…

Not everyone has time to water plants daily, especially with work schedules, travel, or even forgetfulness.

That’s why artificial plants are perfect for console tables. They always look fresh and don’t create mess.

Our homes especially benefit because greenery softens the look of tiled floors and open spaces.

4. Use a Decorative Vase for Texture

A console table with only a mirror looks incomplete.

Add a textured vase (ceramic / glass / metal) and suddenly the space feels styled.

A vase works even without flowers, it’s decor by itself.

Choose neutral colours: white, beige, black, grey, terracotta.

5. Use a Tray (The Key to Keeping It Neat)

Now this is the biggest Sri Lankan problem…

We come home, remove slippers, drop the keys, keep the phone, drop the wallet, and the console becomes chaos.

A tray solves that.

It tells your brain: “Put everything here.”
And it automatically looks organized.

Perfect for:

  • keys
  • wallet
  • AirPods
  • coins
  • perfumes / body mist

6. Add Books (Yes, Even If It’s Just for Styling)

In Sri Lanka, we don’t style with books much, but once you try it, it looks very “Pinterest home.”

Just stack 2–3 clean-looking books and place a candle or small décor item on top.

It gives structure and makes the console look intentional.

Bonus: you can even use old hardcover books from home.

7. Keep Colours Simple (So It Won’t Look Cluttered)

Many Sri Lankan homes have strong colours already, curtains, cushions, wall paint, tiles, wooden furniture.

So, if your console styling has too many colours, it looks messy fast.

Stick to 2–3 tones only.

Example palettes:

  • white + beige + wood
  • black + grey + gold
  • neutral + terracotta + green

8. Style in 3 Items (No More, No Less)

If you don’t know what to do, use this easy rule:

Style in threes.

Example:
Tall vase + tray + greenery
Candle holder + books + small décor

This gives balance, without looking overcrowded.

9. Leave Some Space Empty (That’s the “Rich Look”)

This is something people don’t realize.

A console table looks expensive when there’s empty space.

Don’t fill every corner.
Let the décor breathe.

In our homes, this also makes cleaning easier, and trust me, less dust show.

10. Use the Drawer/Storage to Hide the Everyday Mess

If your console has drawers or cabinets, you’re lucky.

Store:

  • spare keys
  • bills
  • chargers
  • candles
  • batteries
  • small tools

So, your top surface stays clean and stylish, even when guests suddenly show up.

A Console Table Should Feel Like “Home”

Your console table doesn’t need to look like a showroom.

It just needs to feel like:
warm
clean
welcoming
“someone lives here, but it’s nicely arranged”

Even if you do just 2 changes like a mirror and a tray, your home entrance will look 10x better.
